Nature Near the City – Barr Lake State Park
One of the bests spots close to Denver to photography wildlife is Barr Lake State Park. Often overlooked for the more visible mountains, Colorado’s plains have their own gems. Barr Lake, 30 miles east of Denver on I-76, is one of these treasures. Known by bird watchers and trail bikers, Barr Lake has a surprising amount of wildlife and is somewhat of an oasis on the plains. Mule deer, bald eagles, owls, hawks, and lots of other wildlife are often seen. During the first few months of the year, bald eagles make the lake their nesting ground.
Best Eagle Viewing Near Denver
Lookouts near the trail allow a glimpse of the giant eagle nests, albeit from a ways away. Raised wooden walkways and a smooth dirt path make it good for hiking, running, or biking. There is also hunting allowed in the park, but it is kept separate and is not usually apparent. The path around the lake is 9.0 miles total, but the first two or three miles are the best, and then there is a section where you walk along the highway, no thanks.
